More opera please
Having just been to see Rigoletto with my antithetical-to-opera daughter Claire, I was struck by how much she actually enjoyed it. It wasn’t her kind of music, the formality of the singing, the slow development of the story were all very different from he video-blasted normality. And yet... she understood the humanity of the the people involved, she loved the experience, tolerated the absence of drum and bass music, and was fascinated by the fact that so many people enjoyed it and, not the least important factor in her overall review, welcomed the time with her Dad. In other words her life was enriched beyond what either of us expected. I am certain this has something - not exclusively - with the power of opera to transport us to new and vivid places. And we should have more of it.
